Ulf Avander - Artisan - Reindeer Horn - Craft

Meet the artisan - Ulf Avander

For the launch of the EOE Eyewear Antler Collection local artisan Ulf Avander created hand carved details to adorn the upcoming models Sádek Horn and Dearna Horn. Avander sat down and spoke to us about his story, and what makes his craft and this upcoming collaboration special.

The Skellefteå native Ulf Avander has mastered the traditional handicraft of the Swedish North and works closely with the native community in his area, making sure to showcase and push forward the local legacy. Avander has worked on his art since the 70’s, recently marking 50+ years of work carving in antlers.

My parents had a great influence on my life, with their vast interest for the mountains and for fishing locally,” Avander explains. “As an adult I had the great fortune of being able to work in the mountains in Arjeplog for longer periods of time.” He continues.

Avander went through military training in Boden, and during that time he was introduced to the craft by a local sami artisan, and subsequently created his first knife handle. The interest grew from there, and since then Avander has perfected his craft, been awarded multiple prestigious awards, and has written books about the subject that have been translated into multiple languages.

Getting a hold of quality material remains difficult. During my time in the mountains I got to know a sami family that have provided me with antlers of great quality, that they collect on the plains (Reindeer antlers falls off naturally each year).” Avander pauses, and continues “The sami family have inspired my work to a great extent, they have provided me with work and their traditional carvings with reindeer antlers have played a huge part in my life, and in my craft.“
